Roles Deck
Overview
The Roles Deck assigns each player a unique identity or passive power that alters how they approach the game. You can choose to have roles be public and known from the start, or kept secret and revealed only when specific conditions are met.
Setup
Each player draws one Role card at the beginning of the game. Decide as a group whether to play with public or secret roles. Secret roles are revealed only when their condition is triggered or by player choice.
Public Roles
These provide passive abilities or rule-bending powers that are always in effect. Examples include reduced casting costs, life gain triggers, or enhanced combat abilities.
Secret Roles
Secret roles offer hidden objectives. If their unique win condition is met, the player wins-even if the standard win conditions aren't fulfilled. Secret roles may not interact directly with opponents until revealed.
Rules for Secret Roles
Players may not bluff about their role unless the group agrees in advance. A secret role is only revealed when its condition is successfully met or if the player voluntarily discloses it. Only one secret win can be claimed per game. If multiple players reveal secrets at once, the one who met the condition first wins.
Role Interaction
Role effects stack with other card abilities. Some cards may reference or interfere with role status (e.g., forcing a reveal).
Multiplayer Tips
Secret roles are most fun in games with 4+ players. Consider adding a neutral or antagonist role with disruptive goals for added complexity.
Design Tip
Roles are a great way to balance power levels across playgroups or encourage new strategies. Combine with Quests for maximum flavor.
